This Is the Community and Home We Hope to Share With a Child

When people talk about renovating a home, they usually talk about walls, kitchens, paint colors, and floor plans. For us, it was never really about any of that. In fact, one of our favorite home renovation stories isn't glamorous at all.

A gutter fell off the house during a windstorm, and we were convinced we finally had an insurance claim. Someone came out to take a look, and after inspecting everything, basically told us there wasn't enough damage to file one. We still laugh about it.

Looking back, it's one of those funny stories that reminds us that homeownership doesn't always go the way you expect. The truth is, what made this house feel worth investing in wasn't the house itself. It was everything around it.

Mario already owned this home when we met. It was close to family, fit within his budget, and over time it became a place where we could picture building our future together.

One of the things we love most is how close everyone is. Most of our family lives within 10 to 15 minutes of us. That means Sunday dinners can happen without much planning, and last-minute barbecues are always a possibility. We're big on family, and being able to spend time with the people we love matters to us.

The neighborhood itself has become one of our favorite parts of living here. There always seems to be something happening. We can take a walk with our dog, Celina, watch the sunset over the water, or head up the road to the weekly car show that runs from April through October. Celina is convinced she's the main attraction. She stops every few feet to say hello, collect belly rubs, and make new friends. Watching her work the crowd is half the fun.

There are also so many local events that bring people together. We enjoy spending time at events like Alive After Five and the Great South Bay Music Festival, often meeting up with family and friends along the way.

It's the kind of town where people are outside enjoying life.

Kids play together after school. Neighbors know each other. Families gather at parks and beaches. There is a sense of community that feels welcoming and comfortable.

We love that there are so many things nearby to enjoy, from parks and beaches to Topgolf and pickleball. Whether we're spending time with family, meeting friends, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon together, there's always something to do.

Inside our home, the most meaningful space isn't a newly renovated room. It's the kitchen.

I grew up cooking alongside my mom, preparing meals for family and friends. Some of my favorite memories were made around a kitchen table, and those experiences shaped how I think about home.

Today, I still love cooking for the people I care about. Whether we're hosting dinner, having a movie night, or inviting friends over for a self-care night, the kitchen always seems to become the center of everything.

That's what makes a home feel special to us. Not the finishes. Not the updates. Not the square footage. It's who gathers there. It's how people feel when they walk through the door. It's knowing that family is close by, friends are always welcome, and there is room for one more seat at the table.

When we think about the future, that's what we picture sharing with our child.

A home filled with family, friendship, laughter, and plenty of good food.
